With Assante's Gone, Where Does the Fan Eat After Midnight?

Assante's Pizza closed this August at 1845 W. Broad St., ending more than 20 years in the Fan. Most coverage of the closing focused on the pizza. The bigger change is the clock. According to Richmond BizSense, Assante's had been open until nearly 3 a.m. every night for decades. The Fan still has plenty of places serving food at midnight and at 1 a.m. What it lost is its second option between 2 and 3 a.m. That hour now comes down to one counter.

The Hour Assante's Covered

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Assante's closed on a Tuesday and served appetizers, pastas and pies. It also delivered every day from 11 a.m. until just before 3 the next morning. The paper said it was a favorite of college students and late-night drinkers. The owners announced the closing with a sign taped to the door:

"We are sorry we missed you! Assante's Pizza is permanently closed! Thank you all for over 20 years of business. We appreciate y'all."

The closing left a gap in the schedule. Assante's ran a full kitchen with delivery past 2 a.m., which is when most of the neighborhood's late spots shut their doors.

How the Fan's Night Winds Down Now

Sorted by when the food actually stops, the late-night options in the Fan and near VCU close in waves. Hours come from each business's own website where one is posted. The rest come from Richmond Magazine's "Dine After Dark" guide, published in February 2026. Hours change, so call or check before you leave the house.

  1. Midnight. Bamboo Cafe at 1 S. Mulberry St. closes at midnight Sunday through Wednesday. Richmond Magazine listed Village Cafe and Chiocca's as open until midnight daily. Village Cafe's kitchen closes earlier, at 10:30 p.m.
  2. 1 a.m. Get Tight Lounge at 1104 W. Main St. serves its late-night menu from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., with fries until 1:30. The February guide put the kitchen close at 1 a.m. for both Brave Captain at 729 W. Cary St. and GWARbar at 217 W. Clay St.
  3. 1:45 a.m. Scott's Shawarma at 814 N. Robinson St. lists Friday and Saturday hours until 1:45 a.m. on its own locations page. Richmond Magazine rounded that to 2 a.m.
  4. 2 a.m. Beauvine Burger Concept at 1501 W. Main St. posts "Open Everyday, 11am - 2am." Get Tight's doors also close at 2, seven days a week. Bamboo Cafe stays open until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Brave Captain and GWARbar were listed as open until 2 a.m. daily.
  5. 3 a.m. Christian's Pizza at 404 N. Harrison St.

Every row above 3 a.m. has more than one name in it. The bottom row has one.

Christian's Pizza Holds the Last Slot on Its Own

Christian's posts the same hours every day of the week on its website, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., Sunday through Saturday. Richmond Magazine's February guide listed the same 3 a.m. close. It offers both delivery and takeout. Its site lists West Broad Street, West Franklin Street, VCU and the Fan among the areas it serves.

Those hours line up closely with what Assante's offered. Christian's has a pizza menu with calzones, tortellini, ravioli and chicken parmesan, a delivery option, and a kitchen that runs past the 2 a.m. cutoff that closes almost everything else on the list. Before August, the Fan had two pizza kitchens serving until about 3. Now it has one. If you order a pie at 2:15 on a weeknight, Christian's is the only verified option in the area. Order early on busy weekends.

The phone number on Christian's site is (804) 204-1643. Save it, because there's no longer a second 3 a.m. pizza number to fall back on.

West Main Carries the 2 a.m. Crowd

West Main Street holds the stretch between 1 and 2 a.m. Two of the places that stay open until 2 a.m. daily, Get Tight at 1104 and Beauvine at 1501, sit on West Main. Get Tight co-owners Drew Schlegel and Randy O'Dell opened it as an industry hangout. Schlegel told Richmond Magazine that being close to the Altria Theater and other event venues is why they wanted to serve food late. The magazine called its hand-cut fries, served with malt vinegar or housemade aioli, among the city's best.

Beauvine leans on build-your-own burgers, including turkey and vegetarian options, and milkshakes in flavors like Rostov's coffee and Fruity Pebble. Richmond Magazine described it as bustling from open to close.

Just off the Fan toward Oregon Hill, Brave Captain runs a pirate-themed menu from co-owner Josh Novicki and chef Lathen Bullington. It includes crab dip with Old Bay chips, a fried shrimp burger and vegan cheddar biscuits. GWARbar, the restaurant from the Richmond metal band GWAR, covers the vegan side of late night with the Hail Seitan barbecue sandwich and Death to Disco Fries with scratch-made gravy.

Taken together, a late night out in the Fan has plenty of options until 2. After that, the choice comes down to Christian's.

The Fall Openings Haven't Changed the Late Shift Yet

Several Fan restaurant spaces changed hands this fall, and some of the new tenants are well-known names. None of the reporting on them mentions late hours.

Helen and Trieu Tran, who own Pho Thien Phat and Rice Fields, opened Pho Heritage at 1627 W. Main St. in the former Heritage space. The menu includes pho, banh mi and pork bao buns. Down the street, Petersburg-based Sankofa Kitchen opened at 1102 W. Main St., the former Africanne on Main space, putting another African restaurant into the same room. That address is next door to Get Tight.

Two other changes affect the Fan's after-dark options more directly. Juan More Taco closed at 304 N. Robinson St. after two years. Scott's Shawarma is shifting its Jackson Ward location to catering and private events. Richmond Magazine reported that the Robinson Street location in the Fan remains open as usual, so the 1:45 a.m. weekend option is unchanged.

The new restaurants on West Main add lunch and dinner options. Assante's 3 a.m. slot is still open, at least until a new tenant takes over 1845 W. Broad or a current spot extends its hours. Whatever comes next at 1845 W. Broad is the change to watch.

When a long-running business leaves a block, it can change how the street feels. Over time it can also change how buyers judge the homes nearby. If you own in the Fan and want to know where your home stands with the block in its current state, Hank Cosby can walk you through it.
